Environmental pollution from micro and nanoplastics (MNPs) poses significant global health risks due to their durability and accumulation in bodily tissues. While the concern for these pollutants grows, emerging studies highlight the potential of functional nutrients in mitigating the adverse effects of MNPs on human health. This includes nutrients such as polyphenols, vitamin D, and omega-3 fatty acids, which have shown promise in improving the integrity of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and intestinal epithelial barrier (IEB). These improvements can enhance brain function and combat cell death processes and inflammation triggered by MNPs.
This Research Topic aims to explore the role of neurohormetic nutrition in modulating cellular and molecular pathways to counteract the toxic effects of MNPs. The focus is on elucidating how specific nutrients can fortify cellular defenses, enhance barrier properties, and activate protective pathways against oxidative stress and apoptosis in neural and intestinal environments.

Articles can range from original research and reviews to methodologies and perspectives that advance our understanding of how dietary strategies can be optimized to mitigate the health risks of environmental microplastics.
