Climate shocks such as droughts, floods, and extreme weather events disproportionately affect food systems in regions heavily reliant on agriculture. The distribution of these effects on productivity, food security, nutrition, and livelihoods is uneven, with women and marginalized groups typically exhibiting lower resilience to such shocks. This disparity is due to several factors, including limited access to resources, increased labor burdens, restricted participation in decision-making processes, and social norms that hinder adaptive capacity. Recent studies have highlighted the critical intersection of climate shocks, gender, and resilience, emphasizing the need for innovations that foster resilient and equitable food systems. Despite growing recognition of gender roles in agricultural resilience, there remains a significant gap in designing and implementing gender-responsive strategies to enhance resilience to climate-related risks.
This research topic aims to address this gap by collecting interdisciplinary studies that explore innovative approaches to enhance resilience in food systems, focusing on gender-responsive solutions. The goal is to compile evidence and methodologies that policymakers and practitioners can use to implement gender-inclusive interventions. These interventions should aim to build the resilience of both men and women against climate shocks and contribute to the transformation of agri-food systems. By doing so, the research seeks to highlight the dual role of women as both victims and agents of resilience and transformative change in agri-food systems.
To gather further insights into the intersection of climate shocks, gender, and resilience, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:
- Women as agents of change in enhancing resilience and sustainability in agri-food systems.
- Innovative, gender-responsive strategies that enhance resilience to climate shocks.
- Case studies of successful gender-inclusive interventions in food systems.
- Innovations for food systems transformations.
- Policy recommendations for integrating gender considerations for climate resilience.
- Women leadership in innovations and resilience in food systems.
- Empowerment, food security, and nutrition outcomes of climate resilience.
- Gender-driven community initiatives for climate resilience.
