Biodegradable packaging materials composed of natural polysaccharides have garnered significant attention in recent years due to their potential to enhance the quality and shelf life of various food products, including fruits, vegetables, meat, and dairy. The current problem in the field revolves around the environmental impact of synthetic polymer packaging, which contributes to pollution and waste. Recent studies have demonstrated that polysaccharide-based edible films and coatings can be developed using techniques such as electrospinning and casting, offering an eco-friendly and safe alternative. These materials not only reduce the reliance on synthetic polymers but also provide an opportunity to utilize waste products from food processing. Despite these advancements, there remain gaps in understanding the full potential and limitations of these materials, particularly in terms of their mechanical properties, biodegradability, and interactions with different types of food.

This research topic aims to provide insights into the advancements and prospects of biodegradable food packaging, contributing to the development of sustainable packaging solutions. The main objectives include exploring the development of new biodegradable packaging materials, understanding their physical and chemical properties, and investigating their impact on food quality and shelf life.
