About this Research Topic
These new materials take inspiration from nature, which provides many ways to derive functional materials with highly ordered hierarchical structures. Many human tissues such as bones, tendons, skin, ligaments, teeth, etc., are composites, made up of single simple constituents whose amount, distribution, morphology, and organization allow us to obtain optimal properties with respect to basic constituents. Man-made composites mimicking the organization of natural composites can improve on the mechanical, physical and chemical properties.
This Research Topic intends to publish contributions on novel ideas and concepts for the advancement of bio-mimicking, bio-compatibility, cellular materials, and bio-compatible tissues.
Themes of interest are:
-Bio-inspired composite materials mimicking the organization of natural composites to improve the mechanical, physical, and chemical properties.
-Mechanical meta-materials with cellular structure able to provide unprecedented mechanical properties and taking inspiration from the hierarchical structures of nature.
-High-tech applications to artificial bio-compatible tissues.
-Design of surfaces for superior biocompatibility.
Keywords: functional materials, biological, biomedical, bioinspired composites, multiscale composites
Important Note: All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
