Regardless of how it is conceptualised (e.g., as Internet gaming disorder in DSM-5), problematic gaming has been a controversial entity, with various opinions about its status as a distinct mental health issue or an independent mental disorder. This debate has also included discussions about the relationships between problematic gaming and various psychiatric disorders and personality traits and dimensions. The findings that problematic gaming is often associated with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), depressive disorder, various anxiety disorders, other psychiatric conditions and certain personality-based psychopathology have at times been interpreted as suggesting that problematic gaming may be no more than a manifestation of these disturbances. This dilemma has not been resolved and there is a need for further research.
