Recent technological advancements in automated ultrathin sectioning/collection (ATUM), serial block-face electron microscopy (SBEM), focused ion beam-scanning electron microscopy (FIB-SEM), the transmission electron microscope camera array (TEMCA), high-throughput single- and multi-beam scanning electron microscopy, large sample preparation techniques and neuronal circuit reconstructions using automated segmentation applications have necessitated a compilation of the current state-of-the-art with regard to imaging cubic mm or even entire organisms at the nanoscale for understanding the computations of cellular circuits and organisms in their entirety. This Research Topic aims to bring together the different electron-microscopy-based tools and methods used by different groups around the world for imaging cellular circuits and even whole organisms at the nanoscale.
