Reactive oxygen species (ROS) and free radicals, by-products of respiration in aerobic organisms, play a crucial role in cellular function. However, excessive levels can lead to oxidative damage, contributing to cell injury and the development of various diseases. This damage, termed oxidative stress, occurs when there's an imbalance between ROS production and the body's antioxidant defenses.

Nutraceuticals, which are biologically active components of food, offer health benefits, including disease prevention and treatment, especially for chronic conditions. These are often more accessible and cost-effective than prescription medications.

Our current diets, high in sugars and saturated fats, contribute to lifestyle-related health issues such as obesity, infertility, and heart disease. Researchers are exploring the potential of nutraceuticals to improve health outcomes. Previous studies suggest that consuming fruits and vegetables can reduce the risk of diseases affecting the esophagus, stomach, lungs, endometrium, pancreas, oral cavity, and colon. Nutraceuticals may act as free radical scavengers, metal ion chelators, or regulators of the antioxidant defense system, offering significant health benefits. However, existing research often lacks depth, underscoring the need for more comprehensive studies on nutraceuticals in disease prevention.

This Research Topic seeks to advance understanding of nutraceuticals, particularly their role in managing oxidative stress in cells. We invite manuscripts exploring these mechanisms and their effects on disease processes.

We welcome reviews, mini-reviews, and original research articles that provide an in-depth understanding of, but are not limited to, the following subthemes:

- Nutraceutical supplementation in disease prevention or treatment through in vitro, in vivo, or de novo studies.

- Use of nutraceuticals in preclinical or clinical settings.

- Mechanisms underlying the antioxidant effects of nutraceuticals.

- The role of oxidative stress or redox status in the pathogenesis of diseases and its relationship with nutraceuticals.

Chemical anti-oxidant assays like the DPPH or ABTS assay are of no pharmacological relevance and can only be included in a manuscript as a chemical tests / analytical tools.
