The infrastructure requirements and economic challenges associated with zero-carbon options, such as hydrogen, highlight significant barriers to their widespread adoption. Innovative efforts in this field aim to transform how both low and zero carbon fuels can effectively replace traditional internal combustion engines. Recent studies have begun to reveal the potential of hydrogen engines, measuring their brake thermal efficiency and comparing it to conventional fuels. While these advancements demonstrate promising progress, challenges related to cost competitiveness and infrastructure development remain critical hurdles to overcome.

This Research Topic aims to develop a comprehensive understanding of low to zero carbon fuels by examining their operational efficiency and scalability challenges. It will explore key questions regarding the efficiency levels achievable with these fuels and their compatibility with, or superiority over, conventional engines. Additionally, the goal includes evaluating the economic and environmental impacts of adopting low to zero carbon fuel technologies across the automotive and energy sectors, providing insights into their potential for fostering sustainable development.

To enhance our understanding of the complexities involved in implementing low to zero carbon fuel engines, this call for papers focuses on both fundamental studies and advanced applications. We invite contributions that explore a range of themes, including:
