In the past century, numerous articles have explored enhancing sports performance, primarily focusing on aspects such as physical training, fatigue, and physiological parameters. Nevertheless, in recent decades, there has been a notable recognition of the pivotal role played by cognitive parameters in achieving superior results. Over the last decade, the volume of articles specifically addressing mental fatigue has surged into the thousands. Consequently, various strategies aimed at mitigating its adverse effects have emerged in the literature. These strategies encompass cognitive training and sleep. Furthermore, it has been observed that these interventions may not only alleviate the negative impact of mental fatigue but also enhance performance concerning baseline values. Despite these advancements, a comprehensive understanding of these phenomena remains elusive, and there is a pressing need for the development of a substantial body of evidence to unravel the intricacies involved. It is important to clarify the cognitive aspects in diverse sports modalities, being aware of the behaviors and strategies that impair or improve sports performance.
This research topic aims to gather scientific evidence to push the limits of the understanding of mental fatigue, cognitive training, and sleep that might improve psychological and physical sports performance in different populations. The body of evidence must advise coaches, athletes, and recreational practitioners to improve performance in matches and training.
To gather further insights into the cognitive aspects of sports performance, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:
• The effects of mental fatigue on cognitive, physical, and performance parameters across diverse sport modalities, along with an investigation into its underlying mechanisms.
• The effects of cognitive training, either in isolation or in conjunction with physical training, on psychological, physiological, and performance parameters. Additionally, research should delve into the mechanisms behind these effects.
• The sleep or sleep restrictions effects on cognitive and performance parameters, accompanied by an examination of the underlying mechanisms.
