Chronic Subdural Hematoma (cSDH) presents a growing challenge in the field of neurosurgery, with particular significance in elderly populations. Projected to become one of the most frequently treated neurosurgical conditions among adults by 2030, cSDH currently shows an incidence rate ranging from 1-4 per 100,000 in the general adult population, escalating sharply to 127 per 100,000 in individuals aged 80 and above. High-risk groups primarily include older adults and individuals undergoing anticoagulation or antiplatelet therapy. Although traditional surgical treatments like craniotomy and burr hole evacuation have been standard, their associated recurrence rates highlight the need for improved strategies.

This Research Topic aims to broaden the investigation beyond Middle Meningeal Artery Embolization (MMAE), integrating it within a wider spectrum that also embraces open surgical techniques and molecular, basic science, and mechanistic studies. MMAE has emerged as a promising minimally invasive intervention, requiring no general anesthesia, with encouraging outcomes in recent randomized controlled trials.
