Extreme environment plants are a group of species that have evolved unique mechanisms to cope with extreme environmental conditions, such as high salinity, drought, extreme temperatures, and high altitude. These plants are found in diverse habitats, including deserts, arctic and alpine regions, and coastal areas.

The genetic and physiological adaptations of extreme-environment plants have attracted the attention of researchers worldwide. They offer a rich source of genetic resources for developing stress-tolerant crops and other biotechnological applications. These plants have evolved various mechanisms to cope with environmental stress, including accumulating osmolytes, synthesizing protective proteins, and activating stress-responsive genes.

Recent advances in genomic and transcriptomic technologies have enabled the identification of a large number of stress-responsive genes in extreme-environment plants, which have potential applications in developing crops with enhanced stress tolerance.

Extreme-environment plants represent a valuable genetic resource for developing crops with enhanced stress tolerance and other biotechnological applications. Identifying and characterizing stress-responsive genes in these plants offers new opportunities for improving crop productivity and sustainability in the face of climate change and other environmental challenges.

We invite submissions formatted as original research, brief research reports, systematic reviews, mini-reviews, opinions, and perspectives. The work should be of high quality and not under consideration for publication elsewhere. Topics of interest for this Special Issue include, but are not limited to:
Investigating the genetic mechanisms that enable survival in extreme conditions;
• Technological advances and novel methods in detecting and analyzing genes in extreme environment plants.
• Novel metabolic pathways, signalling cascades and protein networks facilitate adaptation.
• Offering insights into the biotechnological potential of extremophile organisms, highlighting their relevance in diverse fields such as biological breeding, bioremediation, pharmaceuticals, and bioenergy.
