Autoimmune and autoinflammatory diseases are distinct but related categories of disorders characterized by an abnormal immune response. While autoimmune diseases involve adaptive immunity and the production of autoantibodies, autoinflammatory diseases are primarily associated with innate immunity and dysregulated inflammatory responses. Autoimmune and autoinflammatory diseases constitute challenges for current medicine, regarding patients diagnosis and treatment, scientific research and healthcare system. Symptoms of autoimmune and autoinflammatory diseases are often nonspecific and can mimic other conditions, leading to delayed diagnosis. Many conditions lack highly specific and sensitive biomarkers for early detection. The search for novel biomarkers in these diseases is ongoing, with several promising candidates emerging from recent research. The improvement of our understanding of these complex diseases can lead to better management outcomes and will offer hope for more effective and personalized treatments. These diseases could significantly benefit from novel biomarkers for early diagnosis.

There is a significant need for novel biomarkers that can accurately identify autoimmune and autoinflammatory diseases at an early stage before clinical symptoms become pronounced; differentiate between various autoimmune and autoinflammatory diseases, reducing misdiagnosis; predict disease progression, monitor treatment efficacy. Finally, the biomarker should be non-invasive or minimally invasive diagnostic tools to increase patient compliance. By addressing these goals and using recent advances, the field can move towards more precise and early diagnosis of autoimmune and autoinflammatory diseases, ultimately leading to better patient care and outcomes. Interdisciplinary collaboration and rigorous clinical validation are essential to achieve these goals and translate scientific discoveries into clinical practice. Novel biomarkers for autoimmune and autoinflammatory diseases encompasses a wide range of biological domains, from genetics and proteomics to metabolomics and the microbiome. By exploring these specific themes, researchers can uncover new insights into disease mechanisms and novel biomarkers.

The aim of this Research Topic is to provide insights into recent advances in biomarker discovery. The understanding of the mechanisms underlying autoimmune and autoinflammatory diseases is essential for developing effective diagnostic tools and treatments.
