Advanced batteries are pivotal to the advancement of electric vehicles, smart grids, portable electronics, and other emerging applications. As batteries become ubiquitous in daily life, significant attention is now directed toward rapid charging, safe operation, health monitoring, internal state analysis, life prediction, and endurance. However, there exist research gaps concerning the safety, reliability, efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and lifespan of battery systems when integrated with new materials, power electronics, system control, artificial intelligence, and other technologies.

The global transition from internal combustion engine vehicles to Electric Vehicles (EVs) stands as a pivotal initiative in combating climate change. Cities, suburbs, and towns have seen a significant rise in new EV adoption. Furthermore, municipalities and townships are setting ambitious climate targets, aiming for complete decarbonization by 2050 or earlier. Yet, beyond EVs, the electrification of public transportation, heating, and cooling presents a distinct challenge in urban decarbonization efforts, necessitating a shift away from fossil fuels amidst surging energy demands. Battery systems hold a crucial role in this context. Topics such as reliability, resilience support, procurement of ancillary services, long-term monitoring using digital twins, safety standards, lifetime capacity management, and optimal energy are likely to attract the attention of researchers worldwide.

This Research Topic aims to consolidate contributions from researchers specializing in advanced materials, modeling, monitoring, control, optimization, and management of batteries in urban environments facing stringent decarbonization goals.
