In recent years, imaging techniques for diagnosing and treating eye diseases have made significant advancements, providing clinicians with deeper insights into ocular structures and pathologies. Various imaging modalities, including color fundus photography, Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography (OCTA), and fluorescein fundus angiography, have become integral tools in ophthalmology. These techniques allow for detailed visualization of the retina, optic nerve, and choroidal vasculature, enabling the early detection and precise monitoring of a wide range of eye conditions. The integration of these imaging methods has revolutionized our understanding of ocular diseases, moving beyond traditional planar images to offer three-dimensional views and dynamic assessments of the eye. This comprehensive imaging approach enhances diagnostic accuracy, informs treatment strategies, and improves prognostic evaluations. However, the rapid evolution of imaging technology also presents challenges, such as the need for continuous education and the potential for image misinterpretation. The standardization and validation of these advanced imaging techniques remain critical to ensuring their effective and reliable application in clinical practice.
This Research Topic aims to provide readers with new insights into the development and application of imaging in the pathogenesis, diagnosis, therapy, and prognosis of eye diseases. We aim to compile clinical and laboratory research to introduce novel imaging technologies or instruments that offer new strategies and understandings in eye disease management. This includes new interpretations of eye structure and disease characteristics under multimodal imaging from pathophysiology to early diagnosis and clinical treatment, the identification and application of multimodal imaging biomarkers, and the evaluation of artificial intelligence models combined with ocular imaging for diagnosing and treating eye diseases.
We welcome submissions of Original Research, Methods, Review, Mini Review, Perspective, Clinical Trial, Case Report, and Brief Research Report. Original, high-quality contributions that are not yet published or currently under review by other journals or peer-reviewed conferences are particularly welcome. We invite investigators to contribute to the introduction and application of novel ocular imaging technology, new interpretations of ocular imaging, imaging biomarkers for early diagnosis and prognosis, and artificial intelligence models combined with ocular imaging. The specific potential fields of application and development of ocular imaging include, but are not limited to:
• Corneal diseases
• Lens diseases
• Glaucoma
• Retina and Vitreous diseases
• Ocular Immunology and Uveitis
• Neuro-Ophthalmology
• Pediatric eye diseases
• Ocular Pathology
• Orbital disease and Lacrimal Disease
• Ocular tumors
• Ocular Trauma
• Artificial Intelligence
• Imaging in tele-ophthalmology
Keywords:
Ocular Imaging, Multimodal Imaging, Diagnostic Techniques, Artificial Intelligence, Eye Disease Management
Important Note:
All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
