About this Research Topic
Post-operative neurocognitive disorder (PND) is a common complication after general anesthesia, especially in older people or after major surgery. They are characterized by impairments in memory, attention and executive function. Sleep disturbances are common after surgery and can adversely affect postoperative recovery and long-term patient outcomes, including insomnia, fragmented sleep, altered sleep architecture and reduced sleep quality. A growing number of clinical studies have found a significant association between postoperative sleep disturbance and PND. Understanding the impact of anesthesia and/or surgery on postoperative sleep disturbance is critical to understanding the mechanisms of PND development and optimizing clinical pathways.
This research topic aims to improve our understanding of the relationship between PND and sleep disturbance. Potential interventions include anesthetic techniques, effective pain management and TMC sleep procedures. We are particularly interested in papers that explore biochemical and neurophysiological mechanisms, the inflammatory response, melatonin and circadian rhythms, and innovative interventions.
We welcome submissions of Original Research, Review articles, and Mini-reviews focusing on, but not limited to, the following sub-topics:
• Advances in the relationship between PND and sleep disturbances with all aspects: genetic, hormone, neurotransmitter imbalance, endocrine and circadian factors, and molecular characteristics.
• Assessment of comprehensive treatment effects: Evaluating the impact of combined treatments, such as drugs with physiotherapeutic or electroacupuncture with physiotherapeutic and so on.
• Novel treatment strategies and techniques: Exploring new precaution approaches and treatment approaches.
