Energy crises and global warming are important issues facing human survival and development. Developing new renewable bioenergy is the most direct way to alleviate the energy crisis, but also an important means to alleviate the greenhouse effect. Therefore, microalgae and their roles in regulating greenhouse gas emissions are listed as a research topic, which is in line with the theme of the journal (Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology) and lays a theoretical foundation for the realization of China's two-carbon goal.

Microalgae is recognized as the most potential biomass in the world. The objective of this research topic is to regulate more synthetic oils from microalgae cells through recombination of incident spectral structure, so as to support the production and industrialization of biodiesel. At the same time, the regulation effect of microalgae metabolism on greenhouse gas emissions is also a concern in the natural environment. Through this research topic, the exchange and interaction of peer scholars will be expanded to promote the development of microalgae and their roles in regulating greenhouse gas emissions research.

The topic of this research topic is not limited to microalgal biomass production, we also focus on related different biomass and energy-related research, and the mitigation effects of microalgal biomass, especially greenhouse gas emissions, and we also focus on greenhouse gas emissions and control in the natural environment. The Topic Editors encourage submissions of original research articles, perspectives, and review articles that cover the following topics:

1. Microalgae-based energy production and conversion technology, such as biodiesel, biological hydrogen production, cellulosic ethanol, and etc.
2. Life cycle evaluation of microalgae-based bioenergy conversion.
3. Research on innovative methods and mechanisms of bioenergy purification.
4. Greenhouse gas emissions in the natural environment and their driving mechanisms related to the growth of microalgae.
5. Process and mechanism of anaerobic oxidation of methane.
