Solid-state batteries (SSBs) represent a significant advancement in the field of energy storage, particularly for applications in electric vehicles and aircraft. These next-generation batteries promise superior energy density, power output, and cycle life, coupled with enhanced safety due to their non-flammable, solid-state electrolytes. Recent studies have demonstrated the potential of SSBs using various materials, such as lithium metal, silicon, and sulfur, for both cathodes and anodes. Despite these promising developments, several challenges persist, including issues related to material stability, interface compatibility, and manufacturing scalability. Addressing these challenges is crucial for the practical deployment of SSBs, and ongoing research is focused on overcoming these barriers to enable this technology.

This Research Topic will explore and address the critical challenges and opportunities in the development of solid-state batteries. The primary objectives include investigating the synthesis and properties of novel solid electrolytes, enhancing the performance of lithium metal and other anodes, and developing high-energy, high-power cathodes. Additionally, the research will delve into advanced characterization techniques, computational methods for performance prediction, and engineering solutions for scaling up SSB components. By answering these questions and testing these hypotheses, the research aims to engender the commercialization of SSBs.
