About this Research Topic
Despite substantial progress in the development of neuroimaging methodologies, translational applications of neuroimaging remain scarce. We have addressed this challenge in our first volume. In this Research Topic, we would like to build upon this effort, by cordially inviting article submissions that present promising neuroimaging applications and methods addressing critical needs for improving health outcomes. These may include Original Research, Clinical Trial, Systematic Review or Methods articles that investigate neuroimaging metrics as outcome measures or in combination with neural perturbation techniques (e.g., neurofeedback, neurostimulation), other translational applications (e.g., guiding neurosurgery). To foster debate, we also welcome critical Review, Opinion, and Perspective articles that survey the field and its progress towards clinical utility.
Empirical studies based on clinical trials aiming to validate neuroimaging applications for clinical use will be preferred, in particular, those using an RCT-design with preregistered and precisely defined clinical outcome measures. However, eligible submissions may also include cases in which:
a) metrics derived through neuroimaging are used for health monitoring (e.g., as clinical endpoints in behavioral or pharmacological intervention studies), including in mobile and real-world settings (e.g., using wearables or portable EEG or fNIRS systems).
b) neuroimaging data are investigated with regards to their utility in supporting diagnostic, disease staging, or patient stratification algorithms;
c) functional neuroimaging tasks (e.g., neurofeedback training) are used to promote health outcomes or comprise part of a clinical
intervention;
d) neuroimaging is used to guide, complement, or support translational applications of related technologies (e.g., neurostimulation, robotic surgery, AI systems, etc.).
Furthermore, Pilot studies, Study Protocol and Technology & code (software) articles, that discuss innovative and cutting-edge solutions, designs, or concepts for translational applications and digital biomarkers or digital therapeutics, will be considered as well, including manuscripts that provide critical or interdisciplinary perspectives. To increase reproducibility and replicability, we encourage using open science research practices (e.g., data and code sharing). We welcome in particular submissions from underrepresented countries. With this Research Topic and the resulting volume, we aim to provide a snapshot of current progress in the direction of converting scientific knowledge into real-world solutions that address medical and societal needs.
