About this Research Topic
Nutraceuticals, encompassing foods, dietary supplements, and herbal products, have emerged as pivotal elements in the prevention and treatment of diseases in the 21st century. These products offer significant advantages over conventional medicine, such as minimizing side effects and serving as natural dietary supplements. The nutraceutical industry has witnessed rapid growth, particularly in the sectors of natural/herbal products and dietary supplements, which are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to ensure safety. Despite their potential, the scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of these products varies widely. This disparity underscores the need for rigorous scientific investigation to validate their health benefits and integrate them effectively into modern medical treatment paradigms. The cross-cultural use of plants in traditional medicine highlights the importance of ethnobotanical and ethnomedical studies in informing drug development and identifying bioactive compounds.
This research topic aims to bridge the gap between traditional knowledge and scientific research in the field of nutraceuticals. By exploring the medical and health benefits of foods, dietary supplements, and herbal products, the research seeks to provide robust scientific evidence to support their use in treating and preventing diseases. Specific objectives include investigating the effects of food diversity on health, understanding the transition from traditional to scientific nutraceutical research, and evaluating the role of natural products in disease treatment. The research will also address the processing and functionality of these products, their role in traditional medicine, and the impact of digital marketing on their supply and demand.
