Post-translational modifications (PTMs) are critical biochemical processes that enable proteins to adapt to various intrinsic and extracellular environmental signals. These modifications include a wide array of derivatizations such as methylation, glycosylation, ubiquitylation, palmitoylation, myristoylation, prenylation, acetylation, phosphorylation, hypusination, and epigenetic PTMs.

While the functions of PTMs have been explored in a limited number of parasites, they are primarily associated with cell growth, stress response, stage-specific transitions, gametogenesis, and translation elongation. However, there is a significant gap in our understanding of the role of PTMs in pathogenesis and infection. Addressing this gap is crucial, especially within the One Health framework, as it could lead to the development of novel drug entities, immunotherapies, and advanced medicinal therapies for parasitic diseases.

This research topic aims to elucidate the role of post-translational modifications in parasitic infections to foster the development of innovative and advanced medicinal therapies. Specifically, the research seeks to answer questions regarding how PTMs influence the pathogenesis and infection processes in parasites. By testing hypotheses related to the functional implications of various PTMs, the research aims to uncover new therapeutic targets and strategies that could revolutionize the treatment of parasitic diseases.
