Long-term exposure to environmental pollutants such as pesticides, heavy metals, persistent toxicants, a high-fat diet, and a sedentary lifestyle can significantly impact the homeostasis of this microbial ecosystem. Disruptions in the gut microbiome can lead to the development of various diseases, including cancer, inflammatory diseases, metabolic and cardiovascular disorders. Numerous studies have shown that the homeostasis of the gut microbiome is altered in diseased individuals compared to healthy individuals of the same age.
