Often referred to as the "second brain," the human gut microbiome plays a crucial role in modulating health and disease development. Long-term exposure to environmental pollutants such as pesticides, heavy metals, persistent toxicants, a high-fat diet, and a sedentary lifestyle can significantly impact the homeostasis of this microbial ecosystem. Disruptions in the gut microbiome can lead to the development of various diseases, including cancer, inflammatory diseases, metabolic and cardiovascular disorders. Numerous studies have shown that the homeostasis of the gut microbiome is altered in diseased individuals compared to healthy individuals of the same age. Factors such as age, ethnicity, lifestyle, and habits influence gut microbiome homeostasis. Increasing research focused on improving microbial ecosystems and discovering essential microbial metabolites will enhance human health and metabolism.

In this Research Topic, we aim to bring together cutting-edge research that advances our understanding of the gut microbiome's role in health and disease. We seek to explore how environmental factors, lifestyle choices, and demographic variables influence the gut microbiome and its associated metabolites.
