Aquaculture has emerged as a vital sector in global food production, yet it faces significant challenges such as disease outbreaks, environmental pollution, and the need for sustainable productivity enhancements. Recent studies have highlighted the potential of native probiotics as a promising solution to these issues. These probiotics can outcompete pathogens, enhance host immune responses, produce antimicrobial substances, modulate gut microbiota, and improve nutrient absorption. Unlike non-native probiotics, indigenous strains are already adapted to the specific conditions of aquaculture systems, reducing the risk of introducing invasive species. Despite these promising benefits, there remain substantial gaps in our understanding of their mechanisms of action, selection criteria, application methods, long-term effects, and economic viability. Collaborative efforts among scientists, industry stakeholders, and regulatory bodies are essential to fully harness the potential of native probiotics in aquaculture.

This Research Topic aims to explore the use of native probiotics in aquaculture to address the aforementioned challenges. Specifically, it seeks to answer questions related to the mechanisms of action of these probiotics, optimal selection and application methods, long-term effects on both the host and the environment, and their economic viability.
