The introduction of biosynthetic resorbable prostheses has led to new approaches and indications in abdominal wall hernia surgery (AWHR).

Biological mesh, initially promising due to its theoretical resistance to infection, has not fully met the expectations of hernia surgeons. Despite its non-synthetic nature, biological mesh has shown high costs, surgical site occurrence rates as high as 66%, and hernia recurrence rates of 50% during long-term follow-up. Additionally, these prostheses are not free from the risk of infection. Recent developments in biosynthetic resorbable mesh, such as P4HB polymer (Phasix™) and polyglycolide—trimethylene carbonate copolymer (Bio-A™), offer a potential cost-effective alternative. Short-term animal studies suggest these meshes might be safe for preventing or treating abdominal wall defects in clean settings, showing higher rates of bacterial clearance and minimal impact on burst strength due to full resorption and reduced foreign body reaction. However, there is still a need for comprehensive studies to confirm these findings and address the potential for hernia recurrence following mesh absorption.

This Research Topic aims to study and describe the indications and results of using biosynthetic resorbable meshes in abdominal wall hernia repair. The main objectives include understanding the characteristics of these meshes, their clinical indications, and their effectiveness in contaminated fields. Additionally, the research will explore the use of these meshes in the prophylaxis of incisional hernia, potential complications, and recurrence rates after surgery. By addressing these questions, the research aims to provide valuable information to researchers and clinicians interested in this field.
