T cell populations including CD4+ helper T cells, CD8+ cytotoxic T cells and Foxp3+ regulatory T cells play a critical role in controlling or promoting inflammatory disease’s progression. In recent years, therapeutic regimens targeting specific T cell populations have exhibited potential value in treating a series of diseases. In the specific context of inflammatory diseases, cytokines, co-stimulatory molecules and metabolic products have an intensive impact on tissue-infiltrated T cell populations, which are prone to differentiate into multiple T cell subsets with distinct characteristics and functions, leading to disease’s control or progression. Thereby, to explore the factors and signal mechanisms that influence the function and regulation of T cell subsets in the circumstances of inflammatory diseases is of great significance for guiding immunotherapy through manipulating specific T cell subsets.

The goal of this Research Topic is to provide a forum to advance research on uncovering the factors and signal pathways that modulate T cell differentiation, proliferation, migration, metabolism and exhaustion in various disease settings. In addition, the special section also welcomes the submission that discover new strategies targeting specific T cell subsets, and the translation in clinic.
