Para-Sport gives people an opportunity to challenge themselves and helps increase people’s self-confidence. The result is a profound sense of freedom, empowerment, and a strong sense of personal identity. As such, the support for para-sport participants and athletes should span multiple levels of society, health, and human interaction. Disability research has received growing attention in the field of sport and physical activity promotion in recognition of not only the potential physical and psychosocial benefits but also as a means of enacting social justice. While the psychological and social well-being needs of para-sport participants and athletes have been examined, less research has sought to examine the experiences and the broader impact of sport among para-sport participants and athletes and how that dynamic has impacted various levels and aspects.
This Research Topic is seeking relevant original research articles, reviews, and commentaries related to supporting para-sport and para-sport participants and athletes and throughout the lifespan. The goals of this Research Topic are to:
1. promote an understanding of the psychosocial experience of participants and athletes within para-sport
2. explore how the experiences of para-sport participants and athletes across the life span impact society, and
3. support future and current para-sport participants athletes as they enter sports and maintain involvement over time.
Through achieving these goals, this collection can inform policy globally, leading to equitable and sustainable support regarding access to engaging in all levels of para-sport.
We aim to publish a collection of articles that emphasize support for para-sport participants and athletes across the lifespan. The types of articles include original research, reviews (systemic and/or meta-analysis), brief research reports, theory papers, and commentaries/perspectives.
Articles that cover one or more of the following themes (or similar) as they relate to adapted physical activity, para-sport, and para-sport participants and athletes are encouraged:
- Pedagogy

- Health systems
- Sports systems
- Transitioning in and out of sport
