For global health systems, the COVID-19 pandemic has been one of the most telling—and perhaps devastating —litmus tests it faced for a century. The current global health infrastructure's lack of resilience has unveiled not only policy defects at the decision-making level but also entrenched structural issues across the public health ecosystem, most of which are rooted in inappropriate or inadequate education and training of healthcare professionals. To further compound the issue, the advent of powerful technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) has further highlighted the flaws in the knowledge and skill structures of the public health workforce (e.g., doctors, nurses, public health professionals, etc.). Mounting research shows, for instance, that doctors and public health experts often rate their AI-related knowledge and skills as suboptimal.
To bring clarity to the aforementioned issues, this Research Topic aims to investigate how the public health workforce can employ the lessons and legacies of COVID-19 and the challenges and opportunities presented by AI. This could be through local reform or systemic transformation of education, training and professional development programs for the public health workforce to effectively and sustainably fortify global health systems against future threats and crises. Please note that this Research Topic values research diversity and creativity and welcomes high-quality submissions from all traditions, schools of thought, and disciplinary backgrounds.
In this Research Topic, we invite manuscripts in the form of original research, review, mini review, case report, hypothesis and theory, perspective, and experimental studies. These can cover, but are not limited to, the following areas related to public health education:
• What are COVID-19’s lessons and legacies for the public health workforce, especially in the post-COVID-19 era?
• How should the public health workforce integrate the lessons and legacies of COVID-19, along with AI's challenges and opportunities?
• What challenges and opportunities might the public health workforce encounter when implementing educational reform in the post-COVID and AI era?
• To what extent should post-COVID public health education incorporate AI-related knowledge and skills into the core curricula?
• Both COVID-19 and AI have amplified existing ethical concerns and introduced new considerations.
• To what degree do education and training on medical or public health ethics need to adapt to reflect and address the threats presented in the post-COVID and AI era?
Keywords:
Public Health Education, COVID-19, Global Health, Artificial Intelligence
Important Note:
All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
