Despite advancements in managing hemodynamic changes and cardiac myocyte function, there remains a lack of therapies that consistently alter the progression of heart failure in most patients. The potential impact of immunological modulation on cardiac health has been acknowledged for years, with clinicians recognizing the detrimental effects of acute infection and immune activation on heart function. Recent studies have highlighted the complex network of inflammatory pathways and immune cell types involved in cardiac injury and repair. However, the precise contributions of the immune system to normal cardiac function and its response to injury remain inadequately understood. This gap in knowledge underscores the need for further investigation into therapeutic strategies that harness the power of immune cells to develop innovative treatments for heart disease.

This research topic aims to explore the discovery of immune modulators and drugs that can directly influence the immune response to enhance recovery after cardiac injury and mitigate adverse remodeling. The primary objective is to identify and test potential therapeutic interventions that target specific immune cells, such as M2-like macrophages, natural killer cells, regulatory T cells, and engineered immune cells like CAR-T cells. Additionally, the research will consider the potential of modifying the immune system to address issues related to aging and failing hearts, with a focus on reducing fibrosis and senescence.
