Mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) are cells with regenerative capabilities that have been isolated and described from numerous tissue sources, including umbilical cord, bone marrow, adipose, and fetal tissues. In the intervening time since their description, a great deal of research has been focused on understanding their basic biology. To that end, it is now understood that the therapeutic benefits of MSCs appear to be primarily mediated via their secretome, paracrine factors released from the cells as soluble factors or extracellular vesicles (EVs) including exosomes and microvesicles.
The goal of this Research Topic is to focus on the application of MSCs as therapeutic interventions. The editors are interested in identifying novel reports of in vivo outcomes for MSCs in either preclinical animal models or human studies. Manuscripts investigating and reporting mechanism-based outcomes are especially welcomed.
Manuscripts submitted for the research topic should be focused on the in vivo application of MSCs or MSC-derived products in preclinical models or focus on the outcomes of clinical trials and application of MSCs in humans.
