The development of the adaptive immune system depends on a dynamic and intricate network of transcription factors that alone or in concert lead to the differentiation and specification of the distinct cellular subsets that comprise a functional adaptive immune system. Studies over the years have identified the transcription factors responsible for the different steps in lineage determination, and examined the molecular mechanisms by which these transcription factors activate a set of target genes and are themselves regulated at various points along the developmental pathway. These include PU.1, Ikaros, E2A, EBF, MYC, Pax-5 IRF4/8, POU2AF1/F2 as well as Blimp-1, Bcl6, and NFkB implicated in various stages of B cell development and function. Likewise, a set of factors exemplified by TCF1, GATA3, BCL11b, ThPOK, Ikaros and RUNX are crucial for T cell development and functionOur goal is to provide a comprehensive landscape of transcription factors networks important for normal lymphocyte development and function. We further plan to include a few studies on the role of transcription factors involved in abnormal B and T cell functions like malignancy and autoimmune disorders. Together these studies are aimed to provide insights into the mechanisms of gene regulation governing immune cell development and function.
The Research Topic is an opportunity to generate an overview of gene regulation in the immune system by assembling a compendium of reviews and articles that address gene regulation at different stages of immune system development. This will help us elucidate important pathways in immune response and regulation.
We are interested in primary research articles, opinion pieces, mini-reviews as well as full reviews. The scope of the Research Topic will encompass, but is not limited to, the following areas:
1) Early B and T cell lymphocyte development
2) Mature lymphocytes
3) Immune responsive effector cells
Keywords:
Gene regulation, lymphocyte development, lymphocyte regulation and function, effector cells, transcription factors
Important Note:
All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
