Sports can encourage community engagement and bring people together as well as break boundaries and drive social change. This said, it is also known that events have both positive and negative impacts on communities, regions, cities, and stakeholders - some expected others not.
When sport is associated with events, it is very common for an economic appeal to emerge, namely by inducing community infrastructures to be built, increasing employment opportunities and incoming expenditures, promoting innovation as well as developing new management and marketing skills. When the scale of the event is closer to the territory and the event is less standardized, as can be the case with non-mega events, they can create a sense of belonging, new opportunities, and ideas, and above all, in a period of great instability, the importance of sports events allows to reembrace and disseminate the fundamental values of society.
Considering the importance of sports events, this Research Topic aims to discuss the different dimensions of sports in the context of their impact framed by the fundamental pillars of sustainable development. Considering the Sustainable Development Goals embraced by the United Nations, the discussion should move around the ways sports events are an important and multidisciplinary driver to understand how to improve sustainability within the territory and the stakeholders involved.
