Water electrolysis technologies and power-to-liquid systems have emerged as pivotal innovations in the quest for sustainable and clean energy solutions. The production of green hydrogen, derived from renewable electricity, is a key process in developing e-fuels and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (eSAF). This rapidly evolving technology offers tremendous promise for transforming energy systems worldwide and significantly cutting down global carbon emissions.

However, the reliance on critical raw materials significantly influences the cost, broader applications, as well as scale-up of electrolysis technologies. Addressing this dependency is crucial. Recycling these materials presents a viable solution, and current research has been increasingly focusing on establishing methods to improve circularity.

The use of hydrogen in the production of e-fuels, especially for maritime applications and aviation, is expected to play a crucial role in the green transition. Recent times have seen several commercial dual fuel vessels, utilizing e-fuels, such as methanol and ammonia. Concurrently, efforts to produce eSAF from green hydrogen continue to intensify.

The goal of this Research Topic is to compile a diverse array of research that collectively advances our understanding of water electrolysis and power-to-liquid systems. Manuscripts that bridge the gap between theoretical models and experimental research, and those that offer novel insights into system integration both within the electroyzer-efuel system and with the existing energy infrastructures are of particular interest. Contributions should aim at highlighting the role of electrolysis (hydrogen), e-fuels and eSAF in achieving environmental sustainability, focusing on innovation, efficiency, scalability, and techno-economic feasibility.

We encourage authors to contribute manuscripts that explore the current advancements and future potential of these technologies in fostering a sustainable energy landscape.
