Background

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a rapidly growing global health concern, with approximately 463 million individuals aged 20 to 79 diagnosed as of 2019, and projections indicating this number could rise to 700 million by 2045. DM is among the top 10 factors contributing to global mortality, underscoring the urgent need for improved diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment strategies. Nutrition management is a critical component in the treatment of diabetes, as it plays a central role in managing blood glucose levels and overall health. However, the complexity of dietary needs, potential food-drug interactions, and the presence of comorbidities necessitate a personalized approach to dietary management. Recent advancements in digital health tools, particularly those leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), offer promising solutions for creating customized, data-driven dietary plans that can significantly enhance the quality of life for DM patients. Despite these advancements, there remains a gap in the comprehensive integration of these technologies into everyday clinical practice, highlighting the need for further research and development in this area.

This research topic aims to explore and advance the field of smart dietary management for precision diabetes mellitus care. The primary objective is to investigate how AI and ML can be utilized to develop personalized dietary recommendations and management plans that cater to the unique needs of individuals with DM. Key questions include how these technologies can improve blood glucose control, enhance patient adherence to dietary guidelines, and integrate seamlessly with existing medical systems.
