Colloidal nanomaterials, particularly colloidal quantum dots (CQDs), have emerged as a promising platform for a variety of applications, including optoelectronics and biological sensing. Initially, the focus was on exploiting quantum confinement effects to enhance the optical properties of these materials, leading to significant advancements in optoelectronic devices. However, over the past decade, the scientific community has shifted its attention towards the use of CQDs in sensing applications. This shift has been driven by the need to detect specific chemical species, high-energy particles, and biological molecules with high sensitivity and specificity. Despite the progress, there remain significant gaps in our understanding of material optimization, surface chemistry, and device architecture, which are crucial for the development of next-generation sensing devices.

This Research Topic aims to collect state-of-the-art and high-quality papers that explore various approaches for implementing colloidal quantum dots as sensing materials across different fields. The primary objectives include addressing specific questions related to the optimization of CQDs for sensing applications, testing hypotheses about their performance in different environments, and identifying the main challenges that need to be overcome for future advancements. By bringing together novel devices, innovative approaches, and expert perspectives, this research topic seeks to advance our understanding and application of CQDs in sensing technologies.
