Neuroinflammatory diseases pose a significant burden on individuals and society, affecting the central nervous system with varying degrees of severity. The neurovascular unit (NVU), comprising neurons, glial cells, endothelial cells, and the extracellular matrix, plays a crucial role in maintaining brain homeostasis. Dysregulation of the NVU has been implicated in the pathogenesis of neuroinflammatory diseases such as multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, and stroke. Understanding the intricate interactions within the NVU and their influence on neuroinflammation is essential for developing effective therapeutic strategies.

The aim of this Research Topic is to delve deeper into the contribution of the NVU in neuroinflammatory diseases, shedding light on the underlying mechanisms and exploring potential therapeutic interventions. By collating and analyzing the latest research findings, we seek to address fundamental questions regarding the role of the NVU in disease progression, the impact of neuroinflammation on NVU integrity, and the reciprocal interaction between NVU components and immune cells. Additionally, we aim to explore novel therapeutic targets and strategies that modulate NVU function to ameliorate neuroinflammatory conditions.
