Rapid urbanization has led to disintegration and deterioration of blue green spaces in urban areas, resulting in serious environmental impacts, and putting severe pressure on urban resilience. Blue-Green Infrastructure (BGI) are natural spaces which together can provide alternative solutions for sustainable urban development by addressing multiple issues faced by urban areas such as urban heat island, pollution, flooding, depletion of ground water, deterioration in environmental quality and so on. BGI can enhance nature based solutions for effective water management, sustainable urban planning. However, there is very less understanding of BGI in some countries and dearth of tools and techniques for identification and assessment of BGI, hence, deeper understanding and development of tools and techniques to assess BGI can assist in proper planning and management of BGI.
This Research Topic on Blue Green Infrastructure for sustainable urban development serves as a comprehensive exploration, fostering a nuanced understanding of BGI's practical applications for climate change and sustainable development , inherent challenges at policy and implementation level, advanced techniques for understanding and managing BGI. Through an integrative approach, it promotes a multidisciplinary perspective, laying the groundwork for future research, policy formulation, and sustainable urban development practices.
