Most efforts to improve outcome for patients with intestinal obstruction have traditionally been focused on assessing the severity and duration of the mechanical obstruction, interpretation of imaging diagnostics, decision on surgical intervention, and rapid restoring of the intestinal continuity. Understanding the gut barrier function and how microorganisms interfere with the human organs has only recently gained attention as fundamental factors influencing the clinical outcome in patients with intestinal obstruction.
This Research Topic covers aspects on bacterial translocation in intestinal obstruction on the pathogenesis of intestinal obstruction and the response of the intestinal barrier to intestinal obstruction. Manuscripts with translational focus are given high priority, but any original research or reviews related to microbiota and intestinal obstruction are welcome.
Submissions about intestinal obstruction and the following aspects are welcome:
• Microbiota
• Sepsis
• Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome
• Antibiotic treatment
• Gut barrier
• Bacterial translocation
Submissions regarding microbiota in inflammatory bowel disease are also welcome if they relate to intestinal obstruction and motility.
Keywords:
Intestinal Obstruction, Microbiota, Translocation, Intestinal Barrier, Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome, Sepsis
Important Note:
All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
