Cellular neuropathology of ocular pain is a critical area of research that delves into the sensory and emotional experiences associated with the anterior segment of the eyeball and the orbit. Unlike other ocular pathologies such as retinal detachment, degeneration, cataracts, and glaucoma, which often occur without pain, ocular pain has become more prevalent due to an increase in surgeries (e.g., cataract or photorefractive surgeries), frequent use of contact lenses, and heightened exposure to artificial environments (e.g., air conditioning, video display terminals, and air pollutants). Current research highlights the need for a deeper understanding of the underlying mechanisms of ocular pain and itch to develop improved therapies and treatments. While significant strides have been made in identifying the role of ocular sensory nerves in response to tissue damage, gaps remain in understanding how these activities are altered by lesions, inflammation, aging, and systemic pathologies, which can lead to neurogenic inflammation or neuropathic pain.

This research topic aims to compile research that explores the cellular neuropathological mechanisms leading to ocular pain due to various factors such as surgery, lesions, inflammation, contact lens wearing, aging, or systemic pathologies. The goal is to answer specific questions about the processes and mechanisms involved in ocular pain and itch, utilizing both animal models and human studies. By testing hypotheses related to these mechanisms, the research aims to improve the knowledge base, ultimately leading to the development of more effective therapies and treatments for ocular pain and itching.
