Nephrotic syndrome, marked by severe proteinuria, edema, and hypoalbuminemia, emerges primarily from damage to the glomerular structures, notably the basement membrane and podocytes. This syndrome is the predominant glomerular disease affecting both children and adults globally, with a noted prevalence of approximately 16 per 100,000 in children, varying significantly across different ethnic and demographic populations. In adults, prevalent pathologies differ ethnically: Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) is notably common in African descent adults, whereas Membranous Nephropathy (MN) prevails among Caucasians. Notwithstanding its global impact, the syndrome presents marked disparities in kidney morphology, disease severity, treatment response, and overall outcomes, inferring a complex interplay of environmental and genetic determinants.

This Research Topic aims to illuminate the multifaceted risk factors contributing to the disparate outcomes witnessed in nephrotic syndrome across different global populations. It seeks to explore how socio-economic and healthcare access, alongside inherent patient factors like ethnicity, genetic makeup, and ancestry, influence disease manifestation and patient prognosis.

With an objective to fortify understanding and inform better therapeutic strategies, this issue will focus on the intersection of socio-economic status, genetic predisposition, and healthcare availability impacting nephrotic syndrome outcomes.
