Metagenomic studies have been the focus of many researchers in recent years by enabling the study of all microorganisms in one simple sample. These studies shed light on the intricate relationships between symbiotic host-microbiota, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi, during both health and imbalance in human beings. Similarly, environmental metagenomic studies continuously emphasize the vital role that microbiota play in maintaining nature's balance. Advanced sequencing techniques such as 2nd and 3rd Generation Sequencing using in silico metagenomics tools have provided unprecedented insights into these complex interactions and mechanisms. It is becoming increasingly evident that a systems biology approach in metagenomics is vital to comprehending the full picture of microbiota's contributions.

In this Research Topic, we invite manuscripts that address key questions in the field, such as the impact of the microbiome on human health, the influence of the human microbiome on treatment outcomes, the role of the microbiome in pharmacological studies and development, the effects of the microbiome on environmental ecology, microbiota evolution, and the utilization of microbiota's metabolic processes.
