Following the COVID-19 pandemic, cities worldwide have been plagued by both short and long-term shocks that continue to hinder efforts toward achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Such shocks, including, but not limited to, deadly infectious diseases resulting from natural or man-made sources, extreme weather conditions due to climate change, military confrontations out of geopolitical tensions, and political clashes rooted in systematic institutional defects, all prevent our urban system from functioning properly. Urban resilience, as an encompassing concept for multidisciplinary collaborations, has been embraced by the scientific community and urban practitioners to initiate constructive dialogues, develop and circulate effective assessment tools, and engage in a concerted effort to make changes. Yet, social theorists’ criticism of “resilience of what, to what, and for whom” remains the biggest obstacle for marrying theoretical debates with the practical implementation of the concept. SDG11 duly reminds us that future cities and human settlements should be made “inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.” As the international development climate becomes murkier and more complex, post-pandemic cities need to rethink how they can navigate themselves into transitioning to a sustainable future.
This Research Topic aims to continue the discussions on urban resilience, inclusive development, and urban sustainability. Specifically, what is the relationship between urban resilience and inclusive development, and how can they work together to co-produce a sustainable future? We invite papers that develop insightful conceptual frameworks and those that offer empirical evidence on the applications of these principles in real-life practices.
We welcome submissions on themes including, but not limited to:
• How does urban resilience contribute to inclusive development?
• What is the relationship between urban resilience and inclusive development?
• Resilience for whom? Inclusive for whom?
• What are the possible tools for achieving urban resilience and inclusive development?
• What are the methodological innovations to assess resilience and inclusiveness?
• What are the geographies of urban resilience and inclusive development in different regions?
Keywords:
Urban resilience, Inclusive development, Socio-ecological systems, Urban sustainability
Important Note:
All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
