Due to novel approaches in cardiac surgery over the past few decades, management of pregnant women with heart disease is becoming a worldwide challenge in developed countries, and the population of pregnancies burdened with preexisting heart disease is expected to increase in the near future. Many of fatal outcomes during pregnancy are due to heart disease, and thus the population of pregnant women with heart disease requires a systematic and multidisciplinary approach consisting of a point of view from the anesthesiologist, cardiologist and obstetrician. Physiological changes during pregnancy regarding cardiovascular system put a specific burden on cardio-obstetric teams caring for such patients. Due to strong physiological impact of anesthesia and analgesia techniques delivered in the peripartal period on cardiovascular system, anesthesiologist are faced with multiple challenges and choices that should be estimated on a case-by-case basis in women with heart disease.
This Research Topic will include manuscripts of any kind that aim to address the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to an obstetric patient with heart disease, as well as choice and modality of analgesia/anesthesia techniques depending on the mode of delivery (vaginal or cesarean section), as well as hemodynamic management, including drugs and hemodynamic monitoring.
The scope of this Research Topic consists of anesthetic management of all pregnant women with heart disease scheduled for vaginal delivery and/or cesarean section, especially those patients with severe heart conditions, defined as category three by the World Health Organization (i.e. aortic aneurysm, primary pulmonary hypertension, Eisenmenger syndrome, coarctation of aorta with valvular involvement, etc.). Regarding the type of manuscript accepted, original research is encouraged, but any kind of manuscript is welcome (i.e. review articles, case reports).
Keywords:
heart disease, pregnancy, general anesthesia, regional anesthesia, hemodynamics
Important Note:
All contributions to this Research Topic must be within the scope of the section and journal to which they are submitted, as defined in their mission statements. Frontiers reserves the right to guide an out-of-scope manuscript to a more suitable section or journal at any stage of peer review.
