About this Research Topic
Despite the enormous potential of medicinal plants as a source of herbal actives, their use is quite limited. By allowing the manipulation of matter at the nanometric scale with new physicochemical properties, nanotechnology emerges as a tool with enormous potential for the delivery of these phytochemicals. Through nanotechnology it is possible to develop nanostructures that protect herbal active ingredients from rapid degradation when exposed to oxidizing agents such as light, oxygen and temperature, as well as eliminating the use of organic solvents by developing formulations in water. Such characteristics expand the application possibilities of medicinal plants, as they allow overcoming some of the limitations of their use. The association of nanotechnology with herbal active ingredients thus emerges as a promising tool to offer revolutionary solutions to extremely serious problems in animal husbandry, such as the treatment of diseases, overcome microbial resistance, assurance of quality and food security and environmental health.
The goal of this topic is to bring together scientific advances that have been made in the delivery of phytochemicals to solve animal husbandry problems through the use of nanotechnology. Productivity, growth promoters, antibiotics, disinfection of facilities, microbial resistance, food additives, animal welfare, food quality, waste disposal are among the main challenges faced in animal husbandry today. The practices of conventional production systems failed to deal with such challenges. Therefore, innovative solutions are required from us, preferably combined with the sustainability of the systems. Nanotechnology based on phytochemicals could bring revolutionary solutions to animal husbandry, ensuring food and environmental safety.
We welcome the submission of Original Research, Review, Mini Review, and Perspective articles on nanotechnology phytochemical-based in animal husbandry, including nanoemulsions, nanoencapsulation, nanogels or polymeric nanoparticles.
