Sustainable development refers to the harmonious pursuit of today’s needs without jeopardizing the capacity of future generations to fulfill their own. In the quest to transition our planet and economy towards a carbon-neutral state, considerable efforts have been made, with a particular focus on sectors encompassing construction, infrastructure, and industry.
As the world grapples with the challenges of urbanization, sustainability has become an imperative for cities across the globe. These multifaceted policies encompass a wide spectrum of strategies devoted to combat climate change and enhance the quality of urban life. These policies emphasize the improvement of energy efficiency, the utilization of clean energy from renewable energy sources, and the revitalization of the existing building stock. In this framework, the efforts retrofitting existing cities in a sustainable way has emerged as a critical agenda.
The Special Issue invites researchers, scholars, and practitioners from diverse disciplines to contribute their insights to our Special Issue on “Retrofitting for Sustainable Cities”. The goal of this Special Issue is to collect papers (original research articles and review papers) to explore innovative approaches, best practices, and transformative strategies for reshaping existing urban areas and landscapes into eco-friendly, livable, and resilient cities.
Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
- Sustainable urban planning
- Urban green design
- Building stock analysis
- Energy retrofit of existing buildings
- Urban and land preservation
- Bioclimatic and biophilia in cities
- Green rating systems
