In line with the target of limiting the world’s average temperature rise to well below 2 ℃ above pre-industrial levels, power, heating and cooling with net-zero greenhouse gas emissions are becoming increasingly important. With the severe shortage of fossil fuel and constant increase in energy demand, it is imperative that renewable energy sources play a critical role in future energy systems. However, most renewable energy resources are intermittent in nature and depend on weather conditions, such as solar and wind power. Hybrid renewable energy systems (HRESs), which integrate renewable energy resources with non-renewable energy sources and/or energy storage, are seen as an effective solution to overcome the shortcomings of renewable energy sources. They can be combined with power generation, heating, and cooling applications to achieve net-zero emissions target.

This Research Topic aims to bring together the state-of-the-art advances in HRESs for power generation, heating and cooling, including but not limited to efficient use of renewable energy (including wind, solar, biomass, geothermal energy, hydropower, etc.) in buildings, transport and industry sectors, design, optimization, control, monitoring, techno-economic assessment and life cycle assessment of HRESs, and so on. High-quality Original Research and Review articles are welcome for submission to this Research Topic.
