Concrete weaves the very fabric of modern cities as the most used manmade material. However, concrete is brittle in nature. The idea of alleviating its brittleness by adding fibers can be traced back to thousands of years ago. In the context of modern construction, developing advanced fiber-reinforced concrete (including several special types, like strain-hardening cementitious composites and ultra-high performance steel fiber-reinforced concrete) requires a profound scientific understanding in physics, chemistry and mechanics. Confronting the global challenges posed by climate change and infrastructure deterioration, we shoulder an unprecedented responsibility to drive forward the advancement of sustainable materials and resilient structures. This is precisely the objective that the editors of this research topic seek to cultivate, foster, and contribute to.

This research topic aims to focus on the recent advances in the multiscale design of fiber reinforced concrete. This encompasses a spectrum of aspects, including low-carbon cement production, fiber-matrix design, cement chemistry, physical design (like particle packing), mesoscale, and large-scale testing of fiber-reinforced concrete, such as steel fiber reinforced concrete.
