Background

Allergic rhinitis is the most frequent allergic condition nowadays. Understanding the epigenetic factors conditioning its frequency and severity is desirable, in order to understand and characterize the potential modifiable factors with harmful influence.

Climate change and the increasing pollution around the globe expose the population to new but also to increased amounts of detrimental products, stimulating an inflammatory state at the respiratory epithelium already affected by germs and allergen sensitization.

Having an update on the effect of environmental factors, conditioned by climate change or directly by pollutants, with potential and/or proven inflammation at respiratory epithelium, is constantly requested.

This Research Topic aims to:
a) Update the epigenetic factors with harmful effect on upper airway.
b) Provide strong evidence on the link of pollution and allergic rhinitis.
c) Generate knowledge for potential intervention.

Suitable themes for the Research Topic incudes but are not limited to:
1. Revision of climate change and sensitization power of allergens
2. Update on known and new pollutants levels data in recent years (where available).
3. Evidence based description of inflammatory effect of pollutants on upper airway.
4. Contribution of pollution on allergic rhinitis´ pathogenesis.
5. Influence of pollutants in the severity of nasal symptoms.
6. Is therapeutic adjustment needed under pollution influence?
7. Proposals of intervention on potential modifiable environmental conditions.
