About this Research Topic
In recent years, the attention of scientists about the role of oral inflammation in the onset of CVD has increased. About oral diseases, periodontitis has a high prevalence of 45%–50% overall, being the sixth most common human disease, and its association with CVD has been established. This is an open field that requires further studies to elucidate underlying mechanisms and new therapeutic targets that allow the designing of new therapeutic options.
This Research Topic aims to publish a new articles about different oral diseases as risk factors for cardiovascular diseases, including animal models and clinical studies. A better understanding of the direct association between oral infection, inflammation, and cardiovascular disease is essential to the development of novel therapeutic approaches and strategies to improve oral health as well as total health.
We will consider original research articles, brief reports, case reports, and review articles focusing on, but not strictly limited to, the following topics:
-New systemic biomarkers associated with oral and cardiovascular diseases
-Oral microbiota and cardiovascular risk
-Periodontal disease, systemic inflammation, and the risk of cardiovascular disease.
-Diet, cardiovascular disease, and oral health.
Keywords: Oral inflammation, periodontal diseases, cardiovascular diseases, gum disease, cardiovascular risk factors
