Biomaterials, encompassing both natural and synthetic varieties, are increasingly employed in a range of medical applications for mechanical support, tissue function regeneration, or tissue replacement. In cardiovascular healthcare, implantable devices and prostheses predominantly feature biomaterial components, making them a focal point of extensive research endeavors. Innovations in biomaterial-supported drug delivery, notable for their adjustable mechanical properties, biodegradability, and controlled release of drugs, offer significant advancements in this field. Particularly, they facilitate targeted treatments localized to specific sites, thus mitigating undesirable side effects and heralding a new era in personalized and regenerative medical therapies.

This Research Topic aims to explore the potential of biomaterial-supported drug delivery systems to revolutionize treatment paradigms, especially in cardiovascular diseases (CVD) where traditional therapeutic responses often falter. Issues of limited effectiveness, poor bioavailability, and low tolerability that typically accompany systemic drug administration can potentially be overcome through the use of biomaterial-based nanoscale enclosures that improve the safety, availability, and duration of drug circulation. Furthermore, degradable scaffolds can tailor localized therapy, enhancing treatment efficacy, reducing toxicity, and fostering tissue regeneration, showcasing substantial promise for broader applications in healthcare.
