Diabetes management has become one of the largest global health system challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic has emphasized the fragility of diabetes management systems by creating unprecedented challenges for patients with diabetes to receive proper care in a timely manner. The use of telemedicine has also risen over these years to compensate for the demand. With the growing aging society, the need for diabetes care reforms that will improve equitable access to high-quality diabetes care across all levels is essential to improve health and reduce health disparities in the future.

Aiming to understand gaps and opportunities for future diabetes care reforms, this research topic focuses on unpacking all aspects of diabetes management through a health systems lens. What are the situations and challenges of diabetes management systems globally? What are the innovative interventions or programs to improve diabetes management systems and health outcomes? How can we translate evidence into action? All of these three questions will be explored in this collection, with the ultimate goal of improving the health and health equity of patients living with diabetes worldwide.

Specific themes of interest include but are not limited to:

• Diabetes management systems: challenges and lessons learnt

• Descriptions or evaluations of health system performance with regards to managing diabetes, including access to care, efficiency, quality of care, and health equity

• Innovative interventions or programs designed to improve diabetes management systems or diabetes health outcomes through any aspects of the chronic care model, including delivery system design (including telemedicine), clinical decision support systems, clinical information systems, self-management supports, community involvement, and quality improvement

• Relationships between health system performance and diabetes health outcomes
